I moved into my house about 9 years ago, the back garden sloped from the back door all the way up to the back fence maybe a 3 meter rise. about 3 years ago i started to re-level and change the garden into a more useable space.<br />
<br />
Finally this weekend all the hard work is over, The garden is all level, paved, artificial grass down, and most importantly for me, the workshop is finished.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SB8IUzJqpxA/VVicuXnPlqI/AAAAAAAAAyk/rjouMzFIi5U/s1600/11138157_889190724470526_580581827121719844_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="112" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SB8IUzJqpxA/VVicuXnPlqI/AAAAAAAAAyk/rjouMzFIi5U/s200/11138157_889190724470526_580581827121719844_n.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
After taking all the trees down out the back and the old shed i managed to build myself a 4 meter by 3 meter workshop. I had my back door, kitchen window and a miss measured bathroom window to use.<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
On the inside i have sheeted it out with 12mm chipboard, walls and ceiling, there is full rockwool insulation in the roof and walls. The power has been ran straight from the Main fusebox in the house, to a fuse box in the shed. There are 4 double sockets with 2no. USB ports incorporated into each. 2 along the back wall where my work station will be, 1no. under the window at the front and one under the fusebox. There are two 600mm x 600mm LED lighting panels on this inside.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-24o7gkgajRI/VVicva-5LtI/AAAAAAAAAys/uRD2T6Xagm8/s1600/11152339_890624954327103_6328926623698950704_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="179" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-24o7gkgajRI/VVicva-5LtI/AAAAAAAAAys/uRD2T6Xagm8/s320/11152339_890624954327103_6328926623698950704_n.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
So this is it my new workshop/summer house. I now need to design the workstation at the back, i am not sure how i will set the units and worktops of, i will maybe do a little research on the web on the best way to have it.<br />
<br />
My plan is to build small layouts that can be taken to local shows, I have a few ideas on what i want to built, but i need to sort my work benches out first.<br />
<br />
I am very pleased to be sitting where i am just now<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was at Modelrail Scotland in Glasgow at the end of February with my boy and the misses, i had not been for a few years and i wanted to see what was all new.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c052sGoW5Po/VPy4B0xuPeI/AAAAAAAAAyE/XiO5U21T3sw/s1600/10073822.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c052sGoW5Po/VPy4B0xuPeI/AAAAAAAAAyE/XiO5U21T3sw/s1600/10073822.jpg" height="271" width="400" /></a>I was looking around the Gaugemaster stand when i seen this starter set for £100. i must have looked at it for a while, because my misses noticed. I was sitting with the boy looking at a large G-Scale thomas layout when she disappears and comes back with it, saying i should really get myself back into trains (as she puts it). So i took up the challenge.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am almost finished the great wall of china which is my back garden, and i am putting plans in place to build a workshops about 6 meters by 3 meters, where i am going to build mobile layouts to take to shows.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With my new track set and the load of buildings and rolling stock i have started trying to plan a movable layout which i can take to model shows. While looking over google imagines i came across this little layout, which covers most of the things i want to put in my layout.</div>

I have a high level viaduct station kit, and the front road plates, I also want to add the trams into the layout as the models are great. But i will need to take this idea and make it my own.<br />

I have been working hard in the house and garden since the start of the year, so all modelling has been put to one side, which is sometimes a good thing.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XBsg6mt8qUE/U-YcKEVANxI/AAAAAAAAAts/TwUO0PX3e1U/s1600/DSCF2797.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XBsg6mt8qUE/U-YcKEVANxI/AAAAAAAAAts/TwUO0PX3e1U/s1600/DSCF2797.JPG" height="150" width="200" /></a></div>

One big change will be the new shed that will replace the old one in the picture. I have a rough size of 2.5m by 3.5m to play with, which is a good size.<br />
I am at a bit of a crossroads, I am not sure if i should build a static layout in the shed, or build it as a workshop and build modular layouts i could take to model shows. It will be well into next year before i have the shed built so i have time to plan out what i want to do. <br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
I was in Germany in March and picked up a DCC Sound Soo Line loco in HO for 120 Euro's, and since then i have been looking over Ebay and managed to pick up quite a few. I like the colour scheme of the Soo line with the White and red. I have also picked up some CN loco's as alot of the Soo line stock was bought by the CN and repainted, but again i liked the colours.<br />

Well as most people know i have been building a N Scale Carpark for over a Year now, and i am pleased to say its finally finished. All the lighting, cars and people are in place and it looks pretty good if you ask me.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
To fill the carpark with cars i use the bags you can buy off Ebay, they contain 50 cars of different colours. and i picked them up for under £10. Now some of the cars in the bag are twisted a little, these i put it in the places where the would not be in full view, but i would say they are definitely worth the money.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jljq5-6JQwM/U-fNJZuGd_I/AAAAAAAAAuo/I_O0trIdFMc/s1600/DSCF2787.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jljq5-6JQwM/U-fNJZuGd_I/AAAAAAAAAuo/I_O0trIdFMc/s1600/DSCF2787.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
You can see from other posts how i put the lighting in each floor, I also replaced the plastic lights at the top of the carpark with working ones. If i had know about the cars you can now get with the working head and brake lights, i would have used them. But i am happy with the the over all effect.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xWiXEyuQ1zE/U-fNJeS1_II/AAAAAAAAAus/OrafPG_DT5g/s1600/DSCF2790.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xWiXEyuQ1zE/U-fNJeS1_II/AAAAAAAAAus/OrafPG_DT5g/s1600/DSCF2790.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
With all the lights in the room off, it really shows the lightning in the carpark off well. All the wiring for the lights runs along the roofs and into the stairwell, where i drilled out a hole in the floor so the wires can pass through.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5chnlSwowhY/U-fNa5x0gxI/AAAAAAAAAu4/H5K7ogKLc_s/s1600/DSCF2793.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5chnlSwowhY/U-fNa5x0gxI/AAAAAAAAAu4/H5K7ogKLc_s/s1600/DSCF2793.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Once the carpark is in place, be it on a static layout or a modular exhibition i will add more detail on the outside help help it blend into its surroundings.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_q2IkVvBkTc/U-fNeCXlqtI/AAAAAAAAAvA/gzwojrII-oo/s1600/DSCF2794.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_q2IkVvBkTc/U-fNeCXlqtI/AAAAAAAAAvA/gzwojrII-oo/s1600/DSCF2794.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This kit was a pleasure to build, the Instructions are very clear and easy to follow and i think it will look great on any layout.<br />
<br />
As for my next build i think it will be the shed out the back, but i do have a load of kits to get on with, there is the full Kato High Level Station, we will see.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00678389171545003911noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3756533935386420997.post-13991319111410476802013-12-31T23:10:00.000+00:002013-12-31T23:11:28.946+00:00Its nearly there<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I have been looking over track plans and looking over the web for some ideas. But the House and Christmas took over.<br />
<br />
I have been looking into Automating the layout using Rocrail or JMRI, I am not sure which one to go for, so I will need to read up more about each.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://wiki.rocrail.net/doku.php">http://wiki.rocrail.net/doku.php</a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://jmri.sourceforge.net/">http://jmri.sourceforge.net/</a><br />
<br />
I don't believe you can do much shunting in N Gauge, so watching long passenger and freight trains will be the way forward, and being able to run the layout from a PC appeals to me. So I am moving back into the attic for the time being.<br />
<br />
With a revised track plan, the Ground Level below will be the only part of the layout with buildings and details on it. The Upper level will be large yards for loco storage and sidings.<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jSdxON5a9YA/UsCYe0YFrDI/AAAAAAAAAow/LrOcguoVXAE/s1600/Ground.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="281" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jSdxON5a9YA/UsCYe0YFrDI/AAAAAAAAAow/LrOcguoVXAE/s400/Ground.png" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
The picture shows the mainline station at the bottom which can hold an 11 car train (there is an 8 car N700 on show to make sure I have the size correct). I am going to use the Kato road plates to create my city streets. As you come out the Station you will pass the carpark I am building on the right which will be attached to a shopping mall via a bridge over the road. As you pass through the city you come across the Football Stadium, opposite the mainline Station. From there you will pass into a smaller station. When into a tunnel, where the scenery will end onto the Helix to take you up to the Upper level staging.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FB7DnPq1dXI/UsCc24Dk9FI/AAAAAAAAApA/9Rq0kUotz64/s1600/Upper.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="282" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FB7DnPq1dXI/UsCc24Dk9FI/AAAAAAAAApA/9Rq0kUotz64/s400/Upper.png" width="400" /></a></div>
As you come up the Helix you will head Left passing the siding which can hold a 16 car Shinkansen, the down into the first of the staging area's. Loop down the bottom an back up to the top of the Helix, I will be using this siding mainly for freight and the few odd ball locos I have, such as the Snow blower. Heading around the Helix and down into the High level Sidings where I plan to keep my passenger stock. The full layout has be designed as a dog bone allow continuous running, and all the sidings can be passed as there is a loop around each.<br />
<br />
As I am looking to run the layout automatically using Rocrail or JMRI this should give me enough sidings to store loco's and a huge mainline to run loco's.<br />
<br />
Its good to get back into design and building this layout again, it will be good to blow the dust off my loco boxes and give them a run.<br />
<br />
Merry Xmas all and have a Merry new year when it come to you.<br />

(Carpark Update)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tree Huggers look away now.......</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Having finished the lower section of the garden, I made a surprise attack on the top level where my railway shed will be located. With the weather changing the billion sparrows that use the trees at the top of the garden as a Launchpad, to get the thousand or so bird feeders in my next door neighbour's garden, it was time to move out. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At the back of the garden I have 6.5m by 6.5m space to locate the shed. I also found a telegraph pole in there, which I need to leave access for.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Having cleared the rubble, and bought a big saw, myself and the misses attacked the tree's. After been bitten to death by Midges the tree were down. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yucvBBaUCow/UkCSocKLi9I/AAAAAAAAAnY/BMFY1v1xLtI/s1600/WP_000955.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yucvBBaUCow/UkCSocKLi9I/AAAAAAAAAnY/BMFY1v1xLtI/s320/WP_000955.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I now have 7 big stumps to be dug out. And a large pile of trees and branch's to be removed. And a huge space to be filled by a railway shed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With the telegraph pole at the top right of the garden and the support wire coming along the back fence line. I am losing about half a meter off from the back fence and to the right for access. So I have about 6 meters square to put the shed on. I will draw the back garden up in AutoCAD to scale and design the layout so I can get as much shed and a less grief as poss.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next stage here once the trees are away, is to get the hut moved forward and the walls built along the sides and the back, and a nice concrete floor.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Stage 2.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now that the I have completed this part I have permission to move to the back of the garden and the railway shed... I have started to draw up plans of the building, and once I have a confirmed internal size I can start designing the layout to go with in.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So this is what I have been all through the summer, I hope to get back to building my Carpark soon also.</div>

We have also seen temp's up in the high 20's and its to get hotter. The attic has been a no go area, as soon as I go near it I start sweating.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e8sUwvpnKxU/UehNHC23C9I/AAAAAAAAAk0/uaiBEeTgidk/s1600/WP_000049.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e8sUwvpnKxU/UehNHC23C9I/AAAAAAAAAk0/uaiBEeTgidk/s320/WP_000049.jpg" width="320" /></a>We have a 10 foot by 12 foot shed in the garden at the top corner. So while I have been working away I have been checking to see if there is room to build a bigger shed in blockwork along the back. <br />
<br />
After taking a few sizes the Area at the back of the garden is 6.5m wide, and 6m from the back fence to the edge of where I have built the play area for Lewis.<br />
<br />
So lots of room for a block shed/Railway room. With a small shed attached to the side for the garden tools and bikes. After a little gentle persuasion with the misses I got full permission, (as long as I change the attic into a storage room).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lYG6rBrulxo/UehPsuWT4vI/AAAAAAAAAlE/mALECWIDvcE/s1600/WP_000055.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lYG6rBrulxo/UehPsuWT4vI/AAAAAAAAAlE/mALECWIDvcE/s320/WP_000055.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So the attic train room is no more.<br />
<br />
I am sticking to N Gauge, and I should be able to build a room about 5m by 4m to take my layout. with a smaller shed on the side of it. I have just had new windows and door installed, and managed to save a door and a window, which can bee used in the shed.<br />
<br />
This will be about 3 feet shorter than the attic, but will be double the width.<br />
<br />
I will still be building my kits at the clubrooms, and collecting more buildings, track and scenic's. As I now have a bigger area to fill. I will update the build as I go along.<br />
<br />
<br />

With the ground floor complete and two of the side walls on, it was time to start putting together the upper floor together.<br />
<br />
The instructions are very well laid out, and so are the spur's. You don't have little bits left here and there, as you complete each part of the instructions you empty each spur. Which is magic for me, as I have a habit of losing bits.<br />
<br />
Every Building on the layout will be lit, one to show off the detail inside, and two am basing this layout in the evening about 8pm (I know, pretty precise). The reason for this, is the football stadium, will have a match just about to start. That way it would be normal to have fans still coming into the Stadium, so it can be nearly full inside and have fans outside. As all the loco's and most of the coach comes with lights this will also show of them as well.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-99Ek-t40ZRs/UboZxBITq5I/AAAAAAAAAjU/yU6iTiHNS0M/s1600/WP_000695.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-99Ek-t40ZRs/UboZxBITq5I/AAAAAAAAAjU/yU6iTiHNS0M/s320/WP_000695.jpg" width="320" /></a> The car park will be in the city near the station, I have decided it will be late night shopping night in the centre, so it is going to be full, as there are 200 spaces, its a lot of cars, and lots of people about.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-99Ek-t40ZRs/UboZxBITq5I/AAAAAAAAAjU/yU6iTiHNS0M/s1600/WP_000695.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a>A friend of mine Ross, has shown me his way of lighting N-Scale Buildings. So this is how I will do it here. Each level of the car park is split with an upper and lower floor per level, but both sides connect to the stair column at one end. In the top picture above you can see I have drilled some holes to take the wires from the lighting out under the base.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-j0a0LGLPeQw/Ubob7hYwe9I/AAAAAAAAAjk/uTQx1WQSCs8/s1600/WP_000698.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-j0a0LGLPeQw/Ubob7hYwe9I/AAAAAAAAAjk/uTQx1WQSCs8/s320/WP_000698.jpg" width="240" /></a>I have started with the floor straight above the entrance to the car park and felt this would have the most light, as this is where you enter and pay to leave. I first cut away part of the ceiling ribs to allow the LED light strip to be fixing to the roof as flat as possible. The lighting strip is in Sets of three lights with each set already having a resistor attached. The back of the strip is self adhesive, but Ross informed me that when the strip gets hot it has a habit of un-attaching itself, so I added a little super glue to help keep it in place. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dDypMGa1f2Y/UbocxDOQEUI/AAAAAAAAAjw/sU4iaZUJPAE/s1600/WP_000705.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dDypMGa1f2Y/UbocxDOQEUI/AAAAAAAAAjw/sU4iaZUJPAE/s320/WP_000705.jpg" width="240" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I cut away a small area to allow the wires to come from the lighting strip to the stairwell without being seen. The lighting strip his two points marked to show you were to attach the wires. As I had not soldered in a while I was hoping not to blow any of the lights by adding too much heat, but I am very pleased to say that all went ok.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z-2dGBTYXYw/UbofC89TZ7I/AAAAAAAAAkA/mtRzRxQwUPI/s1600/WP_000700.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z-2dGBTYXYw/UbofC89TZ7I/AAAAAAAAAkA/mtRzRxQwUPI/s320/WP_000700.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The LED lighting strips can be bought on E-bay for about £10 for 300 LED's in lots of different colours, the one I have used here is warm white. If you require the lighting to be a bit more duller, you can add a resistor in the size you require to achieve the affect you want. As the above photo shows I didn't kill the LED's and I think they look pretty good.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-stF2z0WdEuU/Ubof7FWth3I/AAAAAAAAAkI/zZQmpBIepfw/s1600/WP_000701.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-stF2z0WdEuU/Ubof7FWth3I/AAAAAAAAAkI/zZQmpBIepfw/s320/WP_000701.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hdQvu5ZWBgU/UbohICMnpxI/AAAAAAAAAkU/naPDod1aLNk/s1600/WP_000709.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hdQvu5ZWBgU/UbohICMnpxI/AAAAAAAAAkU/naPDod1aLNk/s320/WP_000709.jpg" width="240" /></a>The next step was to add the barriers and cars to the level. I will be adding people to this building, but as I am still moving this around and nothing is attached I will add them when I come to fix the levels in place, so they are less likely to be damaged. <br />
<br />
I then did the same for the level above, but I used less lighting strips, only 2 sets of 3, instead of 4 sets of 3, so there will be a little less light on the floors above.<br />
<br />
While I was flying along, putting the barriers in and cars I forgot to add the arrow decals on the floor, so I will have to add these in before I get to carried away.<br />
<br />
I am very pleased with my progress so far on this build, and look forward to completing the rest of the floors.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
More will follow as the build moves on, until then I wonder if its possible to built a car park like this on the layout?????<br />

<br />
With all this nice weather we have been having the garden has taken a beating, and the layout has been put to the side for the moment.<br />
<br />
I am still building the Multi Story Car Park at the clubrooms, Each floor has to have lighting added and cars before I can install them onto the kit, So I will post some pictures of this as it progresses.<br />
<br />
I have been watching a lot of YouTube to get ideas for the city and how buildings fit around the railway system.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/UTBiY6h5SXc?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This has given me a lot of ideas for signalling, and station detailing. I am just wondering how I can add in the sound, before each train departs.......</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am back to building the car park Wednesday, so pictures will follow with an Update.</div>

<br />
<h3>
</h3>
<h3>
</h3>
<h3>
Track Planning</h3>
<br />
I have managed to pick-up Kato raised track sections from a fellow club member Ross S, which is enough to cover from the station to the south (Kokutetsu Station) of the stadium to the station (???) to the east of the stadium. I decided to use the road plates after I picked up the Dio-town road system for the front of the Kok station. They are very well laid out and detailed, and I am happy with the overall look. I was planning to see if I could put the faller road system into it, but I am just going to detail up the road, with the huge amount to cars, trucks, and buses I have.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BbB3o0Cr59o/UZeJERYbRAI/AAAAAAAAAhc/Dc1qRufwIeU/s1600/DSCF1187.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BbB3o0Cr59o/UZeJERYbRAI/AAAAAAAAAhc/Dc1qRufwIeU/s320/DSCF1187.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the far end of Kok station where the track starts to curve around into the city. The Carpark will sit on the corner to the front of the layout, as you can see from my track layout above. Having the AutoCAD drawing of the layout is proving very handy. It lets me know exactly how many sections are needed to complete the track layout and how the road section and track fit together. And also an idea how much it will cost me. I now also have an idea of the spaces left for the city buildings. So I have been trawling through the Internet to find some nice city buildings<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-w8QbAGBKEAs/UZeJOglLjBI/AAAAAAAAAhk/U1qnS7nuvzQ/s1600/DSCF1190.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-w8QbAGBKEAs/UZeJOglLjBI/AAAAAAAAAhk/U1qnS7nuvzQ/s320/DSCF1190.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
to put into place, and once I have them bought, I will draw them up an place them in the track plan.<br />
<br />
Here we have a view from half way down the attic. The football stadium will be on the right and Kokutetsu Station on the left, Kokutetsu Station will be almost the full length of this side of the layout, but will these Japanese trains being so long, it needs to be so all the people can get off the train. The attic is starting to look a bit like a Kato shop, but with the way it all fits together and the detail, I can see past them just now.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6BjR87LpbaI/UZeJZ-gQM3I/AAAAAAAAAhs/WuNUTKZ9UeY/s1600/DSCF1191.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6BjR87LpbaI/UZeJZ-gQM3I/AAAAAAAAAhs/WuNUTKZ9UeY/s320/DSCF1191.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The Kato Viaduct station is a nice piece of kit, it comes fully detailed inside, only needing a little colour and some people. The set comes with the entrance, two shops and two extensions. To complete the station I will need a further 15 extension sets to make it a four track station. There will also need to be a hole load of road plates bought. So I can see myself getting a list together and chipping away at it. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZmJA2TGzAIs/UZfX60Wj4VI/AAAAAAAAAiM/NyoQw9IXquk/s1600/DSCF1189.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZmJA2TGzAIs/UZfX60Wj4VI/AAAAAAAAAiM/NyoQw9IXquk/s320/DSCF1189.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
There has been a wee design change to the side of the stadium, I was looking to build an industrial area, but have changed it out to be another station with some more of the city over here. When I was drawing out the road system, I felt it just ended and as there was a few roads that disappeared into the walk way. I wanted to find a way to connect both sides, so I have continued the road on the other side. On a plus side it would be another access road into the stadium for football traffic. <br />
I have added another station here for a few reasons first I felt there would be one for football fans to be able to get to the stadium. another was for running sessions, it would give another stop on the way around when operating, and the last would be that I really really like the Kato viaduct station. I will need to paint the foam black, and sort something for the walls not sure on that front yet. Still at least I now have some track to work with. and a list to make up.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Nice wee video of a 500 in a Japanese City.</div>
<br />

I don't have a drop of track down but I hope that will change over the next few weeks.<br />
<br />
So I have started to build the multi-Story car park. I will be taking my time and detailing the inside with cars, people and lights. I am also looking to add a shopping centre cross from the car park, with a high level walkway linking to two buildings, and the road network passing below. I just need to find a kit for a shopping centre now. I was thinking of putting this beside the football stadium at first, but I have decided to put it in the city.<br />

I bought 500 people and 150 Cars, delivery was very fast from Japan and very well packaged. I am planning to have two rows of lights on each level on the car park, with the wires hidden down the stairwell. <br />

<br />
After opening up the box I was pleased to see the Instructions are also in English and very well laid out. There is a full transfer sheet with all the road markings and signs needed to complete the kit. The signs outside I am going to try replace with Neon signs if I can find something suitable, or make something myself. I will be building this Kit at my clubrooms on Wednesdays nights, so it might take a while, but at least when I am there I will have something to keep me busy. <br />

<br />
Here we have the ground floor, Once cleaned up from removing off the spur the white road markings are required to be put on. Thankfully the parking space's already have there white lines done, and its just the arrows that are needed to be added on the road. There are a lot of decals on this kit, but they are very marked and are shown clearly when they are needed. I have drilled two holes in the base of the stairwell to take the wires for the lighting.<br />

<br />
Last night I completed the ground floor of the Carpark, I have all the holes drilled to take the wire from the lights, and cars are glued in place, some of the cars are a bit rough, so they have been placed in the middle, and not so easily seen.<br />

The end wall had a chimney breast sticking out of it, so I have now framed it out and boarded it, to give it a better finish.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bu4znE_-QxE/UX7DNmRmn_I/AAAAAAAAAe0/SVLMcDWj_pQ/s1600/DSCF1157.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bu4znE_-QxE/UX7DNmRmn_I/AAAAAAAAAe0/SVLMcDWj_pQ/s400/DSCF1157.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have no altered the high level shelf to take my staging area. But as you can see I am keeping all my Stock and Buildings here just now, until I have finished the workshop at the end. I am no master joinery, but I have managed to put a 6 inch (150mm) facer board around the edges of the layout, it sits about 10mm about the insulation. When the road plates are added these should just sit below the top of the wood. Way down the line I will add a curtain of sorts below to hide all the framing below and give it a more finished look. I plan to have switches around the edge of the layout for turning building lights on and off. These will be set back so as not to get damaged when moving around.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6X7sqHvF9WA/UX7DPPNM7oI/AAAAAAAAAe8/dyFJRxDg4ig/s1600/DSCF1152.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6X7sqHvF9WA/UX7DPPNM7oI/AAAAAAAAAe8/dyFJRxDg4ig/s320/DSCF1152.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have a habit of keep lengths of timber, that might be useful but I am going to have to break this and clear out all the scrap wood. I only have the Shelves at the end to build in the Workshop and also the helix and all the woodwork will be finish. I have the weekend off and my boy is at his granny and granddads so I should be able to make a little time to do this. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am going to have to start a to do list. as I don't seem to be getting any closer to putting any track down. To save a little money I am going to design High level track platforms to take my track around the layout, as I might need to re-mortgage the house is I am to do it in Kato Track. The laser cutter at the club rooms will help here. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My Layout plan is coming along well in AutoCAD I now have track and the road plates in position, and I have drawn up a few buildings to see how they can fit into things. Also now the LED's are here I can start to put buildings together with lights, I am just going have to pick up some detail parts to make them look interesting inside and out.</div>

Again you will have to click on this to see it better. the road system is now in with a few buildings put in to see how they would fit. the dashed line is where I might build a bridge to join the road system up here. I have drawn an 8 Car Bullet train in the station to make sure this fits, 10 car trains should fit on each siding ok. I will bee to buy a few extension pieces to lengthen the station. Some times you can over plan things, but once I start to build stuff it will be a good reference tool, and can be altered to suit the build.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UlACKu2VI9s/UXmRY0URecI/AAAAAAAAAdI/trr2LPQfkWY/s1600/Story_Bridge_Panorama.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="151" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UlACKu2VI9s/UXmRY0URecI/AAAAAAAAAdI/trr2LPQfkWY/s400/Story_Bridge_Panorama.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
There will be a Road and a Rail bridge between my football stadium and city section on the back wall. As the club has its laser cutter up and running I thought I would have a go at designing one to fit the gap. I had a look through Google images to get some inspiration and came across the Story Bridge in Australia.<br />
<br />
So I based my design on this and got to sketching. About 8 Hours later (over a few nights) I had my design finished and to the size to fit the opening in my layout. I had managed to break it down into a kit I could cut from thin plywood and had made myself a set of instructions. As I had drawn a section of the Football Stadium I thought I would put both in there correct locations in the section of the Attic to see how it looked. Well it looked stupid, the Stadium dwarfed the Bridge and it just didn't look good at all, so it was scrapped.<br />
<br />
It got me thinking about the football stadium and its size, as I am building it in the middle of my city I wondered how other buildings would look around it. So I draw up three buildings to scale that I own and put them into the section to see how it would look.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lMlpvRtavCA/UXmVHlrql-I/AAAAAAAAAdg/XZbciUQwMmg/s1600/Dortmund-Section.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lMlpvRtavCA/UXmVHlrql-I/AAAAAAAAAdg/XZbciUQwMmg/s400/Dortmund-Section.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You may have to click on the picture to see it properly </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
From left to right, Football Stadium, Aoshima Carpark, and Two Kato High Level Buildings. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Looking how the towers and car park size up against the stadium, and once I scratch build some high towers I think it will all look ok. I will just have to sort something out for the bridge that does not look out of place.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
____________________________________________________________________________</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
After buying the High level viaduct station, I have decided to use the Dio Town Road plates in front of it for the road surface. I really like how they look and give a nice road finish, yes it might look to clean, but I think when I fully detail them, with people, cars and buildings I am hoping they won't look to bad. I have drawn a plan of my attic, again using AutoCAD, to see how the plates would fit in with my base board size, and it seems they were meant for it as the fit perfect.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5h82fntt7qQ/UXmYfuHy0NI/AAAAAAAAAdw/d06VSuaz6BE/s1600/Dortmund-Plan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="237" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5h82fntt7qQ/UXmYfuHy0NI/AAAAAAAAAdw/d06VSuaz6BE/s320/Dortmund-Plan.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
You will have to click on the picture to see it properly, It shows the location of the football stadium and the station across from it, with the track in red running round. Drawing up the road plates in yellow to scale, I know how many of each type I will need to complete my road network. The road that will come to the bridge will only be to service the football stadium and will take you into car parks around the stadium. At the end of the station I have put a road that looks like it is cross the walkway to the other side, where my industrial area will be. I wanted to create the impression that the road would continue on and join both sides on the layout, I may build a removable bridge for this section at a later date. With a road plan set I now have a rough idea of building space around the layout, so I can start to build and buy buildings to start make this look like the city I want.<br />

About the Loco:-<br />
<br />
The <b>Class EF210</b> <span style="font-weight: normal;">(<span class="t_nihongo_kanji" lang="ja" xml:lang="ja">EF210形</span>)</span> is a Bo-Bo-Bo wheel arrangement DC freight locomotive type operated by Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight) in Japan.<br />
The locomotives are built at the Kawasaki Heavy Industries factory in Kobe. Based at Okayama, Shin-Tsurumi, and Suita (Osaka) depots, they are primarily used on freight on the Tōkaidō Main Line and Sanyō Main Line, replacing class EF66s.<br />
As of 1 April 2009, 74 EF210s were operated by JR Freight. Nine EF210 locomotives are scheduled to be delivered during fiscal 2009, with nine more scheduled for fiscal 2010.<br />

I wanted a building that would hide part of the movement of cars and loco's, and also look like it had been cut through in section. This building had to show the full construction and internal detail that was need to make it stand and see what went on in there.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The last building is the power plant and substation. As we were making this a night scene and every light could be turned on and off. We decided to put a sequences in where some workman in the substation manage to dig up and cut the power cable, sending the layout into darkness. There is a control panel built into the power station with flashing lights, as they manage to sort the damage the lights on the layout start coming back on, over about 15mins, then at the end they hit the power cable again. With the lights coming on at different points of the layout, it draws you eye to different details.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One small detail part is Chuck's Chuck Wagon. I converted a Silverline Caravan into a Fast food wagon. There is a full set of grills with food being cooked on them, a fridge keep the drinks cool. The bar on the outside also has a full range of sauces.</div>

I will take a lot of what i learned building this into building my N gauge layout.<br />

Phoenix Fruit Express in an American HO exhibition layout that myself and John Bowman built.<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<em>Building the Layout up for testing</em></div>
<br />
I collected American HO loco's and started to build a layout in the attic, but found I didn't have enough space for what I wanted to do, so that was scrapped. I found myself with about 40 Boxcars and a few diesel loco's, so I worked on a plan to build a layout that these could be used on.<br />
<br />
There was an Old EM Gauge club layout laying in a members garage, it had been in there for about 10 years. It was an Iron Works 6 foot long by 2 and a half foot deep. The layout was stripped to the baseboard, all track was lifted and most of the buildings and scenery removed, the only building to survive was the large shed at one end. We decided to extend the layout at both ends, we added another 4 foot long board to the scenic section, and a 4 foot fiddle yard after the shed, making the layout 14 foot long in total.<br />
<br />
Having a lot of old reefers and an old Ice house Kit I to decided base the layout on the Pacific Fruit Express that used to carry fruit from California over the Rockies to the east side of American.<br />
<br />
(A Little info on the Pacific Fruit Express - PFE)<br />
<em>The company was founded on December 7, 1906 as a joint venture between the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads. It began operation on October 1, 1907, with a fleet of 6,600 refrigerator cars built by the American Car and Foundry Company (ACF).</em><br />
<em>In 1923, the Western Pacific Railroad joined the venture by leasing its own, brand new fleet of 2775 reefers to PFE. They were painted in standard PFE colours with only WP heralds on the cars instead of the paired UP-SP markings. The WP cars were all retired by the late 1950s, among the last wooden reefers in PFE's fleet. WP ended its partnership with PFE in late 1967 and joined Fruit Growers Express instead.</em><br />
<em>PFE's assets were divided between the UP and SP when the company was split on April 1, 1978. It is now a UP subsidiary.</em><br />
<em></em><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KR5RUqEZuvY/UVIRKAJ3r3I/AAAAAAAAAZY/rArNDOrs6sw/s1600/PFE.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="211" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KR5RUqEZuvY/UVIRKAJ3r3I/AAAAAAAAAZY/rArNDOrs6sw/s320/PFE.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
The trains that ran from one side of the country to the other, were 90 to 100 box cars long, with 4 and 5 loco's pulling them, we were going have to cut it down a bit to make it work on the layout. We decided to make it an End of the road yard, where the last 4 of 5 box cars would coming in to be emptied, clean, repaired, restock and sent on there way.<br />
<br />
We wrote a list of the buildings that would be required. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-N74aqZLq1lE/UVIUaH-MJkI/AAAAAAAAAZo/JBG3qIJu5QQ/s1600/WP_000017.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-N74aqZLq1lE/UVIUaH-MJkI/AAAAAAAAAZo/JBG3qIJu5QQ/s320/WP_000017.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
A <em>warehouse</em> for storing the food and products that arrived from across the country. This was the only part of the old layout that survived the cull. The Shed has 3 roads, we made the front one the In road from the Staging. (as if this is were the PFE arrived from it long journey) the other 2 roads would be used for emptying out the boxcars when they arrive. The gantry you can see has full lighting and a signal to show if the road is clear. The back to roads have working roller shutter doors with flashings lights above the doors, and this all works at the flick of a switch and some amazing electronics for Donald and Kenny fellow club members.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-US50UAwugcA/UVIWVS_sPGI/AAAAAAAAAZw/mGwKsUUhnzs/s1600/20100627_007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-US50UAwugcA/UVIWVS_sPGI/AAAAAAAAAZw/mGwKsUUhnzs/s320/20100627_007.jpg" width="320" /></a>The first building we started to built was the packaging plant, it was a Walthers Slaughter House Kit, that we made low relief by bringing the back of the building to the front to double the length. We thought this buildings would make and provide the packaging to the warehouse for the goods coming in, and also sell to local businesses in the area. This build took 8 months to build. The main building has 3 floor level and the annex on the side has 2 floors. The club use a Lightning set up called DMX, it is mainly used in theatres to run there lightning in stage shows. This building has over 100 LED's in it, that this programme allows us to turn each one on and off as and when we want. The ground floor of the main building in the packing plant its self. and stores for the trucks. On the second floor we build as dispatch and control room for the train yard and truck fleet, there is paper and pens on the desks, lockers tables and chairs. There is also the board room which looks like it has just had a big meeting and the owners big office next door. On the top floor we decide the work force would require somewhere to get changed and eat, so we built a full kitchen and canteen, with everything from dirty dishes, food on the plates, people sitting eating and playing cards, to queuing for there food. There is also a changing room with showers and toilets. On the roof of the main building we built a packing plant sign that lights up and some water towers as the Americans love these. The Annex building to the side I a small delivery bay for small vans, and a parts stores on the second floor.<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
John Bowman Wiring the lights inside the packaging plant</div>
<br />
As there was so many lights in this building and so much detail we decided to make the layout a night scene so you could see the lights and the detail inside. This is by far my favourite building on this layout.<br />
<br />
We then moved on to the Ice house and Ice platforms.<br />
<br />
<span class="mw-headline" id="The_.22Ice_Age.22"><em>The "Ice Age"</em></span><br />
<em>The use of ice to refrigerate and preserve food dates back to prehistoric times. Through the ages, the seasonal harvesting of snow and ice was a regular practice of many cultures. China, Greece, and Rome stored ice and snow in caves or dugouts lined with straw or other insulating materials. Rationing of the ice allowed the preservation of foods during hot periods, a practice that was successfully employed for centuries. For most of the 19th century, natural ice (harvested from ponds and lakes) was used to supply refrigerator cars. At high altitudes or northern latitudes, one foot tanks were often filled with water and allowed to freeze. Ice was typically cut into blocks during the winter and stored in insulated warehouses for later use, with sawdust and hay packed around the ice blocks to provide additional insulation. A late-19th century wood-bodied reefer required re-icing every 250 miles (400 km) to 400 miles (640 km).</em><br />

<em>By the turn of the 20th century, manufactured ice became more common. The Pacific Fruit Express (PFE), for example, maintained seven natural harvesting facilities, and operated 18 artificial ice plants. Their largest plant (located in Roseville, California) produced 1,200 short tons (1,100 </em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonne" title="Tonne"><em>t</em></a><em>) of ice daily, and Roseville's docks could accommodate up to 254 cars. At the industry's peak, 1,300,000 short tons (1,200,000 t) of ice was produced for refrigerator car use annually.</em><br />

<em>Top icing is the practice of placing a 2-inch (51 mm) to 4-inch (100 mm) layer of crushed ice on top of agricultural products that have high respiration rates, need high relative humidity, and benefit from having the cooling agent sit directly atop the load (or within individual boxes). Cars with pre-cooled fresh produce were top iced just before shipment. Top icing added considerable dead weight to the load. Top-icing a 40-foot (12 m) reefer required in excess of 10,000 pounds (4,500 kg) of ice. It had been postulated that as the ice melts, the resulting chilled water would trickle down through the load to continue the cooling process. It was found, however, that top-icing only benefited the uppermost layers of the cargo, and that the water from the melting ice often passed through spaces between the cartons and pallets with little or no cooling effect. It was ultimately determined that top-icing is useful only in preventing an increase in temperature, and was eventually discontinued.</em><br />

<em>The typical service cycle for an ice-cooled produce reefer (generally handled as a part of a block of cars):</em><br />
<ol>
<li><em>The cars were cleaned with hot water or steam.</em></li>
<li><em>Depending on the cargo, the cars might have undergone four hours of "pre-cooling" prior to loading, which entailed blowing in cold air through one ice hatch and allowing the warmer air to be expelled through the other hatches. The practice, dating back almost to the inception of the refrigerator car, saved ice and resulted in fresher cargo.</em></li>
<li><em>The cars' ice bunkers were filled, either manually from an icing dock, via mechanical loading equipment, or (in locations where demand for ice was sporadic) using specially designed field icing cars.</em></li>
<li><em>The cars were delivered to the shipper for loading, and the ice was topped-off.</em></li>
<li><em>Depending on the cargo and destination, the cars may have been fumigated.</em></li>
<li><em>The train would depart for the eastern markets.</em></li>
<li><em>The cars were received in transit approximately once a day.</em></li>
<li><em>Upon reaching their destination, the cars were unloaded.</em></li>
<li><em>If in demand, the cars would be returned to their point of origin empty. If not in demand, the cars would be cleaned and possibly used for a dry shipment.</em></li>

Castle Rackrent is a Large O scale Irish narrow gauge layout. All the loco's, Rolling stock and buildings are scratch built or kits, some very nice stuff.<br />
<br />
This is the first time i have seen this layout or even been to a running session on one, so i was not sure what to expect, but what a great night of fun and laughs I had.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JaOfarhyKzo/UU3WFFRpNEI/AAAAAAAAAY4/Csa0nUUMh98/s1600/DSCF0970.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JaOfarhyKzo/UU3WFFRpNEI/AAAAAAAAAY4/Csa0nUUMh98/s320/DSCF0970.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
We arrived just before 8pm there was 8 of us, John B, John H, Donald, Brian, Ian, Steve, myself and of course Richard himself. We had a quick run down of how the layout was operated and how the controllers and bell signals worked, then we were allocated a section of track to operate, there are 6 available so 2 of us doubled up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Pl17unaVWr4/UU3Gx8iEhdI/AAAAAAAAAYE/LA7sdXG3uBY/s1600/DSCF0954.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Pl17unaVWr4/UU3Gx8iEhdI/AAAAAAAAAYE/LA7sdXG3uBY/s320/DSCF0954.JPG" width="320" /></a>(This picture shows myself to the left, straight in front is Ian with brain just behind him. Brian section was on the right. Way in the back is John B in the terminus station and layout out owner Richard is on the right.)<br />
<br />
I was given a small station section and was working with Ian, which was handy as i had no clue to what I was doing and Ian had operated there before, so he left me to do most of the work, while keeping a close eye on me. Each station had a laminated sheet with a hair clip to keep your place, on one side there was a timetable and the other had all the bell codes. above your head there was bells that were connected to different sections, we had two above our head the connected up to John B in a terminus station, and the other down to Steve and John B in the main station.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HNBI19_9tQo/UU3HNrpNQ2I/AAAAAAAAAYQ/y7FO8vqUuNo/s1600/DSCF0957.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HNBI19_9tQo/UU3HNrpNQ2I/AAAAAAAAAYQ/y7FO8vqUuNo/s320/DSCF0957.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

Signal levers</div>
<br />
We started our day at 4pm on the timetable (hair clip showed us this) then we were off. there was bell's going off all over the place, 1 ding for attention, 2 dings for season clear, 3-1 dings for P1, working the signals and points, it was a good laugh, and Ian helped me allot, we started about 8:20pm and when i next looked up it was past 10pm. I think over the course i saw about 5 trains, which does not seem like allot but, there was always things to do, and you were kept very busy.<br />
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Crib sheet for all those bell codes and the life saving hair clip.</div>
<br />
With this being my first operating session, its an area of model railways i have never experienced before. I have been to exhibitions with club layouts and operated for the general public to watch, and answering questions, but this was very different, it was more relaxed, there was good banter and a lot of laughs. I liked the idea that from where you were standing you could not see other people's sections and you had a timetable with a list of trains to follow, it was all very well organised.<br />
<br />
It has made me think allot about how my layout will operate, i will not have the space to have as many people in the attic, but i think 3 people would fit in ok, so i might look at ways to be able to operating running session in, rather than just a long run around. But I might be able to have both.<br />
<br />
Last line must go to a huge thanks to Richard for a fun night, many thanks.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
My baseboard construction is finished for the main track level, I only have the helix to build which I will have to get drawn up and pick up some wood.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NrwMHrDHh3c/UUtb4I6KI5I/AAAAAAAAAXE/gJeBLY5H2fo/s1600/DSCF0949.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NrwMHrDHh3c/UUtb4I6KI5I/AAAAAAAAAXE/gJeBLY5H2fo/s320/DSCF0949.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The construction is 50mm x 50mm timber framing, with a covering of a 6mm Hardboard. I am no joiner but I am happy with how its finished even if I managed to cut my hands to shreds with screws and rough timber. I plan to cover the top of the hardboard with 25mm polystyrene insulation to help with sound proofing and give a level base to work off. . So other than the Helix, I just need to clear all the scrap wood out, and build shelving units in my workshop to store all my stuff that is sitting fiddle yard just now. Its handy working for a builders merchant to pick up the bits I need at a better cost. I just need to start working for Kato now as I think I have bought enough stuff to get shares in the company.<br />

On that note I have made another buy, of the Kato viaduct station set, to use as the base for my passenger station. I have some plans to merge this kit with the Greenmax multi story station building I picked up a few weeks ago. I am looking to double the station up to take 4 lines of track, so there can be a passing loop on each side. I also have a Kato high level station I want to work into as well. It will be a large station but I don't want it to look like different buildings throw together, and with the stadium opposite it will not look to bad.<br />

But these are just small detail parts that look very good. The company is called Sankei, they do lots of buildings and small detail parts for N Gauge. I picked up a venting machine set for only £2.50, I am going to place them in the station and around the football stadium. Should they look ok, I will branch out to other detailing kits.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have also picked up 500 painted n scale people for £10, as I will need many thousand for the stadium I will keep all the seated people out, ready to paint in the team colours of yellow and black.<br />

Having managed to relocate half the crap that seems to have built up in the space, I now know how much space I have. <br />
<br />
<br />
The first picture shows how it was when I first start to design my new N gauge layout.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tOMIwuoyvG4/UURybkLbGoI/AAAAAAAAAV4/o2zrW6WetrA/s1600/DSCF0834.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tOMIwuoyvG4/UURybkLbGoI/AAAAAAAAAV4/o2zrW6WetrA/s1600/DSCF0834.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tOMIwuoyvG4/UURybkLbGoI/AAAAAAAAAV4/o2zrW6WetrA/s320/DSCF0834.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This view is from my workshop area looking down the length of the room, the shelves on the left will become my fiddle yard or sidings via a helix in the workshop. The boards below the sidings will have my station, which will be located in the city centre. At the very back the city will continue to the right with a few bridges crossing the opening to the baseboards to where the stadium will be built. To the front of the photo on the right this will be an Industrial area and the multi story car park will be located around here.<br />
<br />
<div align="left">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_wGyHxFMCGg/UURyjAIxKZI/AAAAAAAAAWE/rPX87P-YWgs/s1600/DSCF0837.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_wGyHxFMCGg/UURyjAIxKZI/AAAAAAAAAWE/rPX87P-YWgs/s320/DSCF0837.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The above photo is looking into my workshop, which will soon be stripped out and the boards for the Helix built. Both sides of the baseboards need to be connected up to complete them, but I have run short of the top boards.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3fxMLFd9_50/UURyyODQofI/AAAAAAAAAWM/SCft2_FMdfk/s1600/DSCF0841.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3fxMLFd9_50/UURyyODQofI/AAAAAAAAAWM/SCft2_FMdfk/s320/DSCF0841.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
When building this side I had to take into account the size of the stadium so I have drawn a rough outline on the board to show where is will sit. and how much space I will have around it. I am thinking of the Kato Tram System to service the stadium from the main station. The stadium will be some size and I am looking forward to starting to built it. I will add more photo's when I have finished this weekend.<br />
<br />
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------<br />
<br />
With the rest of the time that was left to me this weekend, I managed to strip out the workshop area of all the shelves and remove all the junk that was under the work bench.<br />
<br />
<div align="left">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qjTxUhYZ6gQ/UUXMQ-3NmzI/AAAAAAAAAWY/wAP9G3SiN6U/s1600/DSCF0843.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qjTxUhYZ6gQ/UUXMQ-3NmzI/AAAAAAAAAWY/wAP9G3SiN6U/s320/DSCF0843.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have now cut the hole in the workshop wall to allow my trains to go from the workshop to the Sidings on the shelves above the main boards. To finish the base boards I have to build the helix and fill in two areas with the top cover board, I am a few pieces of wood short so this will need to be done another weekend.</div>

<div class="it-ttl" itemprop="name" style="text-align: left;">
I have been after one of these for a while and came across this one on E-bay for £58 so i put a wee bid in and won. I will keep my eyes open for the 4 car add on set to complete it. I was not really looking to add more Loco's to my collection as i am looking to add more track and buildings, so i guess the track will be waiting for another few weeks. There is some info below on the Doc i found on the web, makes for good reading.</div>

<b>Doctor Yellow</b> <span style="font-weight: normal;">(<span class="t_nihongo_kanji" lang="ja" xml:lang="ja">ドクターイエロー</span><span class="t_nihongo_help noprint"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Installing_Japanese_character_sets" title="Help:Installing Japanese character sets"><span class="t_nihongo_icon" style="color: #0000ee; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: bold 80%/normal sans-serif; padding: 0px 0.1em; text-decoration: none;">?</span></a></span>)</span> is the nickname for the high-speed test trains that are used on the Japanese Shinkansen ("Bullet Train") dedicated express passenger train routes. The trains have special equipment on board to monitor the condition of the track and overhead wire, including special instrumented bogie's and observation blisters.<br />
The 'Doctor' part of the name is obvious from their test and diagnostic function, and the 'Yellow' part comes from the bright yellow colour they are all painted. Some have a blue waistline stripe, some a green one. The original colour scheme of yellow with a blue stripe (applied to the Class 921 track-recording cars) was created by reversing the colours (blue with yellow stripe) used on <span class="nowrap">1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in)</span> narrow-gauge track-recording cars.<br />
In build and appearance, they are very similar to production, passenger carrying Shinkansen trains, and line inspection is carried out at full line speed (i.e. up to 270 km/h/168 mph on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen).<br />

From the Japan Times<br />
<br />
<strong>‘Dr. Yellow’ train keeps line safe, elates spotters</strong><br />
<br />
NAGOYA — A seven-car shinkansen line inspection train runs about once every 10 days between Tokyo and Hakata in Fukuoka Prefecture, and rail buffs who spot it claim it brings good luck.<br />
The train has been nicknamed “Dr. Yellow” because of its colour but it is officially called a comprehensive shinkansen test train.<br />
Nobumasa Naruchi of West Japan Railway Co.’s shinkansen management headquarters said it is “what you might call an X-ray train, in that it collects data on deflections of overhead wires and bending of the rails while running.”<br />
The train’s job is to inspect aboveground equipment.<br />
On Jan. 29, the Tokaido Shinkansen Line was halted in Kanagawa Prefecture when an overhead power catenary severed, apparently after being struck by an out-of-place pantograph — an accordionlike device that extends from the train to touch the wire and thus transfer electricity to the train’s electric motors.<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hgMEeHbxRI4/UT5L1VToqaI/AAAAAAAAAVk/EZX1f5Omx_g/s1600/Dr_yellow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="259" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hgMEeHbxRI4/UT5L1VToqaI/AAAAAAAAAVk/EZX1f5Omx_g/s320/Dr_yellow.jpg" width="320" /></a>The test train that travels the 1,174-km distance between Tokyo and Hakata is popular with rail fans. An urban legend has it happiness comes to those who spot it.<br />
Its timetable is not published. Nevertheless, a Web site details the places and times it passes so those interested may figure out when they can see it. A cheering crowd with cameras was on hand when Dr. Yellow pulled into Shin-Osaka Station en route to Hakata in December.<br />
All of the coaches’ windows are blocked out. Carriages six and seven house large equipment to gauge signals and electricity. A dome in coach five lets inspectors view pantograph connections.<br />
A special platform under the floor of coach four is used to inspect the tracks.<br />
Gear to control the dome and all data collected by the various diagnostic equipment is fed to coach three. Coach two carries a device to check wear on the overhead power cable. Signals and power are monitored in coach one.<br />
“Based on data provided by Dr. Yellow, maintenance workers on the scene fine-tune electric wires and the rails,” Naruchi said. “That’s a rewarding job for us.”<br />

Using the AutoCAD drawing programme, i have drawn my attic to scale, showing the full area i have to build my layout in. As i was wanting to see if i could fit a football stadium in, i thought this was a good idea. So once i had a plan of the stadium drawing up i worked out the best place for it to go, then designed the track plan around it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iZq-Qbt7pC4/UTuf42AP1kI/AAAAAAAAAUs/szHJsm8SGlo/s1600/Track+Plan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="237" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iZq-Qbt7pC4/UTuf42AP1kI/AAAAAAAAAUs/szHJsm8SGlo/s320/Track+Plan.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have a display shelf that sits about 400mm above my baseboard height. I used to keep war gaming models there, but i sold them all off, to buy more N Scale stuff, so the shelf was going to be coming down, but i have decided to give it a new lease of life, as my fiddle yard or sidings.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0vFNfsRenP4/UTuf3OHVYvI/AAAAAAAAAUk/AqmCniQCe0o/s1600/Track+Plan+High+Level.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="237" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0vFNfsRenP4/UTuf3OHVYvI/AAAAAAAAAUk/AqmCniQCe0o/s320/Track+Plan+High+Level.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The track layout will be one massive loop, the track will be a double line running through the scenic sections and at each end there will be a loop. The plan is to have the trains run over the layout on one side of the track and return on the other. This will give the train the impression of going somewhere then coming back, (an idea i must say i have taken from a Club Layout, Ausfarht Sud - designed by John Bowman (<a href="http://www.thistle-modelmakers.com/ausfarht%20sud.htm">http://www.thistle-modelmakers.com/ausfarht%20sud.htm</a>)). And it will also allow me to have trains running and not worry about them, I am not planning to chip all my locos to run DCC just now, but that will be the plan once i have the money for all the chips. In the workshop area i am planning to have a Helix to take the track from the baseboard level to the yard level. The yard will have a loop around the outside with the sidings off points in the middle. The other loop will be under the Helix.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bIGXiDCOtkc/UTuf54mBztI/AAAAAAAAAU0/qmnhgygHivk/s1600/Track+Section.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="237" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bIGXiDCOtkc/UTuf54mBztI/AAAAAAAAAU0/qmnhgygHivk/s320/Track+Section.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This will limit me to just a few loco's running at the same time as they will all be on the same piece of track, but i am happy with this, as i have said before there is not much scoop for shunting or switching. I prefer to just see trains running, i will put a siding in the Industrial area and in the station.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The double shelf will loose a level and become my fiddle yard/Siding.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have picked up two buildings from eBay and Plazajapan.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first is this multi story car park, which i am going to place near the football stadium for parking, I have 3 bags of N gauge cars with around 100 cars in each, so i will be filling this with cars, lights and fans. The kit was £35 with £10 postage form Japan.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Second building is an Industrial Plant Factory, i am planning to have an area of the layout turned over to Industry. So i have a reason to run the Freight i have bought. There are a lot of nice industrial buildings by greenmax, So this area will have a mixture of different plants and factory's, with lots of pipe work. This Kits was £15.00 and the postage was combined with the car park for a total of £16. So i got everything for about £76 which i was very happy with.</div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
I am a big Glasgow Rangers fan for my sins and first thought about building there stadium Ibrox, but thought i would never run British Loco's only European and Japanese. So i started looking for a Stadium to build in Europe and one i have seen a game in while following my team.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I have been to Germany a few times for the football so started my search there. I came Across Architects Plans for Borussia Dortmund's Stadium, Westfalenstadion which has a capacity of 80,720. In December 1995 i was at a game between both teams which finished 2-2. So my mind was made up and i was going to try build it. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m8Gfec2VpMY/UTkJ7uYpUlI/AAAAAAAAATg/XpBg824XGaM/s1600/westfalenstadion01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="230" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m8Gfec2VpMY/UTkJ7uYpUlI/AAAAAAAAATg/XpBg824XGaM/s320/westfalenstadion01.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Using a Drafting package called AutoCAD i managed to get the drawings scaled down to 1:160, i had a lot of messing about drawing football pitches to scale and trying to match them up, but it was worth the stress. Having scaled the drawings down to N Gauge the stadium was going to be 1.2m (4 foot) by 900mm (3 foot) in size. Which turned out to be just a little to big for the place i had in mind for it. So i had to scale it down by another 20% to get it to fit in. The complete stadium will measure 1m by 800mm and be 200mm high to the roof.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EOy2LvbMlOc/UTkJC2fPdCI/AAAAAAAAATI/VUFWDx0aeyQ/s1600/plan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EOy2LvbMlOc/UTkJC2fPdCI/AAAAAAAAATI/VUFWDx0aeyQ/s320/plan.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The Opposite is the Drawing of my Attic space (Sorry its a bit light, but should be ok when you open it) with the location for the stadium, it is gonna be the main point of interest in it, but with the Burger stalls, Street Sellers, Crowd, inside stadium detail and all the rest that goes on around sporting events, there is loads of scope for detail. I am still working on the track layout, but a simple double loop with some large storage track in my work area will not be far away.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I don't think you can do much shunting or switching in N Gauge, so some nice long runs for my passenger trains will be the order of the day. Straight across from the stadium i plan to build a large passenger station. The rest of the layout will be left to a compact high rise city and Industry area.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As the track plan progresses i will update it.</div>

After more than 6 years of construction, it was inaugurated on May 4th 2011, at last. The development of the Airport began in June 2005, already. In 2008 the planning phase was finalised, and the final building plans were worked out. </div>
Since the 22nd of August 2008 the plan was lying on the layout base, initiating the construction phase, officially. The layout arose right in front of our visitor’s eyes. Not only for aviation and technology fans, the impressive Airport is the new Wunderland highlight. Up to 40 different aircraft's (from Cessna to Airbus A 380) are taxing independently on this Airport to the gates. They are also being moved back from the gates by push-back vehicles in order to taxi to the runway. There they are accelerating and taking off or landing respectively. Each aircraft is equipped with original lights and original, realistic turbine sounds. <br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The Carsystem of the Airport</span></h1>

Thus, it is possible to simulate a more dynamic movement of any vehicle, and lights, turn signals, as well as speed levels can be switched and altered while driving. Furthermore, infrared technology enables a more precise position analysis. Thus, the vehicles can drive with a shorter safety distance to other vehicles in traffic. Constructing the Airport vehicles was quite challenging for the team. In order to stuff ever more technology into ever smaller vehicles, we had to make many laborious modifications. Here, we have to point out those relatively small interior cleaning vehicles for the Airport, as all components had to be exchangeable, in order to save time when repairing them. <br />
The following vehicles can be seen on the Airport, as well: tankers, catering trucks, de-icers, septic tank trucks, garbage trucks, luggage cart tugs, dispenser vehicles, passenger shuttle buses, crew shuttles, snow ploughs and blowers, as well as ground staff vehicles.<br />
However, the yellow-black Follow-me vehicles, which usually direct aircraft's on the airfield, do not exist on Knuffingen Airport, in this manner. Because the more tiny the technology, the more difficult it becomes to synchronise two vehicles following each other on the same stretch. Here, even two identical motors have different handling characteristics. That’s the reason we’ve created a fleet management system, functioning via lit carriageway markings, directing the pilot over the airfield. In reality, a similar system has been established on the London and Munich Airport by now – it seems as if our idea was not too far-fetched, after all.</div>

Sorry for the shaky camera at the start, but it was still getting used to my new camera. On the Sunday we had a behind the scenes tour, the operation system in place for stacking the planes for take off, is a work of art. The road system in the airport is very cool, each plane has a fuel tanker, bus (if required). There is a working Flight information board, which tells you which is the next flight coming in and going out, All very impressive.</div>
